Blessed with picturesque mountains, Sursingdhar promises beautiful Himalayan trails. To experience the hiking pleasure at its best, we present handpicked locations for maximum exploration in a day’s time. Short scenic drives from the lodge leads to offbeat Himalayan trails amidst Pine, Oak, and Rhododendron forests.
- Witness the snow crowned mountains in the full glory
- Birding and Photography
- Understanding the Himalayan ecology
- Nature walk – Appreciating the flora and fauna of the region
Option 1: Ghantakaran Temple – We begin with a scenic drive to Gaja. Form our lodge, it takes around 1.5 hours to reach Gaja. The starting point of this trek is the beautiful Phalsari village. While on the trail one will trek amidst a pristine mixed forest and witness incredible views around. The gradient is moderately uphill with a few steep patches in between.
The sight of clouds floating and touching the mountains will leave you awestruck! We trek for around 2.5 hours to reach Ghantakarna temple situated at an altitude of 2800 mts (9186 ft). As you reach the temple, the aura becomes even more positive with the chimes of numerous bells hanging around. The priest in the temple is always happy to narrate the interesting legend of Ghantakaran, who wore bells in his ears and hence acquired this name.
While descending back one must take a sneak peek at Bheem ki Gufa, though it’s shut now, you will still be able to steal a glance inside. It is believed that Bheem cooked food near this cave and that it leads to Delhi.
Descending down is an easy downhill hike. One can comfortably descend in an hour’s time. All in all, Ghantakaran Temple though a religious place for Jains, is a wonderful trek!
Option 2: Surkanda Devi Temple – All the outdoor lovers can feast their eyes with a scenic drive to Dhanaulti. After a short one hour drive, we reach the starting point of the trek. Instead of taking the traditional route from Kaddukhal, we choose a beautiful forest trail in Jonah to start this trek. While on the trail, one will witness a mixed forest and various types of beautiful wild grasses. Some of these are of medicinal importance too and some just to add on to the beauty of the trail.
We trek for around 4 to 5 kms uphill to reach Surkanda Devi Temple (2750 mts/ 9,045 ft), known for the Ganga Dussehra Festival and mythological story of Lord Shiva and Sati. The gradient is moderate with a few steep patches in between. Experience the magnificent view from the hill top and the temple. Usually, you will find a devotee playing drums at the entrance of the main shrine. The rhythm of these drums adds on to the folk flavour in the air.
While descending back we take the traditional route, which is a concrete pathway. One can comfortably descend back in less than an hour’s time and reach Kaddukhal. From Kaddukhal, the lodge is just a short one hour drive.
